Who we are

Banksia Community Care are a community housing collective who provide support for members of the LGBTQIA+ community experiencing family violence.

We work hard to support people who are often unable to access support through mainstream services, especially young people experiencing the intersections of gendered violence and other forms of marginalisation, such as racism, and ableism.

LGBTQIA+ people, housing and homelessness

Homelessness and housing insecurity majorly impact LGBTQIA+ people in Australia, especially young trans and gender-diverse folks. This might look like sleeping rough, couch surfing, struggling to find housing, and a range of other situations that deny people access to safety and security.

Many LGBTQIA+ folks experience homelessness and housing insecurity due to discrimination and structural violence, such as homophobia, transphobia, racism, and many more. This may also include experiences of physical, verbal and/or emotional violence from people in the home, such as family members, housemates, and carers, or while trying to access housing from people such as real estate agents, landlords, service providers, and case managers.

LGBTQIA+ people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity are often also navigating a range of other difficult circumstances, such as:

  • Social isolation and exclusion due to family, friend, and/or community rejection

  • Family/domestic violence

  • Financial difficulties

  • Mental health issues and trauma, including intergenerational trauma

  • Gender dysphoria

  • Systemic barriers to gender-affirming support and care (such as housing,
income support, health and other basic needs), especially through mainstream institutions and services

  • Systemic barriers to education and employment

  • Criminalisation and/or incarceration

Everyone deserves a safe place to live, and there are safer space housing options for you.
